Adidas Handball Spezial

Originally released in 1979 for indoor handball players. 

The “Spezial” name comes from adidas’s archive of sport-specific models; over time, it transitioned from performance footwear to a lifestyle sneaker. 

Its revival in recent years ties strongly to retro and streetwear culture. 

Upper / Materials

Many versions have a suede upper, giving a soft, vintage feel. 

Some colorways combine suede and leather for added structure and premium look. 

Lining is synthetic / textile for breathability. 

Sole / Traction

Uses a gum rubber outsole, characteristic of many indoor court shoes — provides grip + a retro aesthetic. 

The sole is relatively low-profile, giving good court feel (or “street feel” in lifestyle usage). 

Design / Style Details

Classic T-toe design (a panel over the toe reminiscent of older indoor court shoes). 

Serrated 3-Stripes on the side, which is a hallmark of adidas. 

Metallic “Spezial” branding on the side in many versions. 

Special tongue label/logo that says “Spezial” — nod to its heritage. 

Fit / Comfort

Regular / true-to-size fit according to adidas. 

Some versions include an OrthoLite® sockliner to improve cushioning and comfort.
